On Thursday, October 18 we meet with Dr. Tennant to discuss Antietam
and March at 7 pm in the Program Room of the Sturgis Public Library on
the Sherman Street side of the building. The library doors are locked at 7 PM.
If you arrive later than that, please knock on the window of the room and we'll
let you in.
We have a field trip planned for Saturday, October 20. Randy Bender will
meet us at 1:30 at the Ft. Meade Cemetery. Use the gravel road west of the Ft.
Meade entrance closest to Sturgis. He will visit with us about the cemetery and
help us find the gravestone of at least one Civil War Veteran there. We will go
from there to the Ft. Meade Museum, where Bob Kusser will tell us some things
about the museum before we study their collections on our own. Unfortunately,
Bear Butte State Park will be closed and its collections stored away by then, so
we are unable to incorporate that into our field trip.
Making Sense of the American Civil War is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of its “We the People Initiative,” which promotes scholarship, teaching and learning about American history and culture. It is made possible locally by the SD Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
